SRP Children's Programs



                                    SUMMER READING PROGRAM FOR GRADES K-4

How to Participate

1.       Register for the Summer Reading Program (SRP) at the Summer Reading Kickoff on June 28th at 6:00 p.m. If you are unable to attend, you may register after the 28th in person                   or email your name, address, phone number, school, and entering grade to                                                                  jamlibkids@gmail.com.

2.       Upon registering, you will receive a BINGO card that should be completed and returned                           to Miss Lisa by August 12th in order to complete the SRP.

3.       Participants who complete their BINGO card by the August 12th deadline are invited to the “On Your Mark, Get Set...Read! Finale Party” at the Library on Tuesday, August 16th at 6:00 p.m. Make your own ice cream sundae, hang out with your reading friends and win                                                                      some cool prizes!

4.       The fun continues when you go back to Melrose School! Turn your BINGO card in to your homeroom teacher during the first week of school and receive even more prizes for your                                                                           reading!

Summer Reading Kickoff                                                      

Come celebrate the beginning of Summer Reading by  signing up for the SRP while having some fun! There will be pizza, beverages, crafts and Legos. Child, tween and teen readers are all invited to attend this event which serves as the official start of what we hope will be a very productive summer of reading in Jamestown!

Dave Marchetti: Animal Experiences                                    

Dave Marchetti's Animal Experiences program is a fun and incredibly hands-on way to meet turtles, snakes, lizards, some small mammals, and Wally the Alligator up close and personal. Dave's program combines learning some interesting facts about his animals with the thrill of actually handling them. Dave's presentation can put you completely at ease with animals you might not normally touch. Join him and his friends for a wonderful hour             program.

Jamestown Fire, Police and Rescue Touch a Truck                       

Representatives from each of these town departments will be on hand at the library to share what they do. Ever want to get up close and personal with a fire truck? Or see the inside of a squad car? This is your chance to “touch a truck”!
(Please note that the Library Parking Lot will be the location for this event so you should either walk to the library or find parking on a side street. Thank you.)

Mad Science                                                                               

Mad Science of Southern MA & RI provides exciting hands on/minds-on science "edutainment" to spark the imagination and curiosity of young minds.
Join us on a scientific journey as we use hands-on activities and exciting demonstrations to explore the science of sport. Learn the physiology of our response to exercise and explore how inertia and gravity interplay with sports.

The Giant Turnip Puppet Show - Special program with puppeteers from Washington, D.C.

Beech Tree Puppet’s whimsical and humorous telling of this Ukrainian folk tale celebrates community and caring for the earth. An old man and his wife who, after lovingly preparing and tending their garden, grow a vegetable so large they can’t pull it up by themselves.  The story is told with hand-crafted rod-puppets, and much singing.  Shadow puppets reveal what happens under the ground, including a helpful and jolly root gnome. Question and answer session follows.

Great Baldini Magic Show                                                         

Join the Great Baldini and his assistant Skinny on a magical journey. As the audience chants Skinny's name, the magic begins to happen. Everyone will discover that reading can be fun and entertaining. The Great Baldini will use comedy and magic to demonstrate the importance of taking care of your eyes, especially for reading.

Henry the Juggler                                                               

Henry the Juggler is considered armed (and legged) and dangerous. He is known to cause spontaneous outbursts of laughter.  He speaks little, but says a great deal through his expression and body language (and road signs!). He has in his possession BALLS, CLUBS, RINGS, TORCHES and other apparatus of his trade. He is capable of changing his height through the use of stilts, and walking on a thin wire high above the ground. WARNING:  Henry involves innocent bystanders in his act!

Bwana Iguana                                                                               

Bwana Iguana Reptile Adventure is a fun, and interactive reptile show that allows the audience to get up close and personal with some common, as well as exotic reptiles. Ray Ward's level of enthusiasm, coupled with his sense of humor keeps the crowd entertained, while also educating them about these mysterious animals, too. It's always a fun time, and kids truly love it. The kids will be running to the book shelves to learn more when Ray inspires them to get "On Your Mark, Get Set, READ!"

Finale Party with Games by Casey Farm

Come treat yourselves to a make-it-yourself ice cream sundae for all of your hard work!
Ice cream, book giveaways, and raffle prizes will abound at this fun evening for our super readers!      
Don’t forget that the prizes and fun will continue when you go back to Melrose School so be sure to complete the Summer Reading Program.
